Can the Zika Virus Affect You?

There has been a lot of misunderstandings and myths surrounding the Zika virus and the recent outbreaks. An infographic released by the University of Arizona is making the facts about this virus clear. While the outbreak is dangerous and can affect a lot of people – especially pregnant women and their babies – the virus itself is not new.
The Zika virus is transmitted by mosquitos. A carrier mosquito that has bitten an infected person can then transmit the virus to others through bites. Those who have travelled to regions with Zika virus outbreaks must be extremely careful and are advised to perform checks to prevent infecting others.
The same infographic also suggests that 41 states have reported an outbreak in the United States and a total of 312 known cases were discovered. Infections are not always followed by symptoms, so be sure to get yourself checked, especially if you have traveled to places with a high number of cases.

You can find out more about the Zika virus through the Targeting Zika: The Threat and Fight Against the Virus infographic, produced by the University of Arizona Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.
