Yassamina HAICHA ABDAT. TEACHING READING FOR SPECIFIC ECONOMIC PURPOSES: IDENTIFYING CRITERIA FOR TEXT SELECTIONAbstract I t wouldn't be new to affirm that English functions as a global language, and has become the language widely adopted for political, technological, cultural linguistic and educational development. Similarly, it has witnessed such development in its role in the Algerian educational context since 1990's, and more particularly after the advent of globalization process. Yet, within the field of education, the need for English for specific purposes (ESP) continues to increase throughout the world. Therefore, ESP which has established itself not only as a basic branch of English Language Teaching (ELT) as a viable and vigorous movement but has also incorporated on discourse analysis and corpus linguistics. Thus, in very precise and concise terms, the present paper endeavours to define and discuss some principal components related to the subject matter, i.e. reading as a basic linguistic skill, ESP in general, and teaching reading comprehension for specific economic purposes in particular. In addition, the second objective of this paper would be to highlight the criteria needed for text selection as a pedagogical practice for undergraduate student at the Department of Ecomonics.
